Oakcrest Elementary

WOW it is hard to just choose a few books to talk about! These are a couple of the ones we liked best.

New Bear at School by Weston Weston: Book Cover
 By: Carrie Weston                          All Grades

This book is about bears first day of school and how the others judge him before they get to know him. We took a little more time to discuss why we shouldn't judge others with the 4-6 grade classes.

Gator Gumbo by Fleming Fleming: Book Cover
By: Candace Fleming                               All Grades

We really enjoyed this book! It talks about an older Alligator with a problem and how he solves it. We noticed that it has similarities to a few other stories as well. Such as The Gingerbread Man and the Little Red Hen. The kids had a lot of fun guessing which parts came from which book.

Heartland Elementary

We all have read the favorite "There was an Old Woman who Swallowed a Fly." Who knew there were so many new versions of this all time favorite? There was an old Lady who Swallowed a Shell is written by Lucille Colandro and illustrated by Jared Lee. The kids loved the twist on the story! We have the story on CD and the calypso music really makes it fun.

We are going to share "There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Bell! at Christmas time.

"Mail Harry to the Moon"  is a book that lots of our students can relate to. It is written by Robie Harris and illustrated by Michael Emberley. The story of a boy who isn't sure how he feels about having a baby brother, until he decides Harry really needs him.

HAYDEN PEAK

We read the book "Cowlick" by Ditchfield.  We had a funny discussion about cowlick's with the students.  It was great to see their reactions as students and teachers commented on their own cowlicks.

Title: Dora's Chicks
Author:  Sykes, Julie
Age:   K-3

Have you ever read a story to the children where they are so excited about it, that you could barely get the words out?  This is one of those books!  They had so much fun finding the chicks, and they were excellent with their math skills – even kindergarten.  If you want the children to be involved, this is your book.  Helpful hint:  Just remember to pause and let them find the chicks before reading the page.

Terra Linda

Title:  Bad Dog Marley
Author:  John Grogran
Age:  K-4
Topic:  Love Of A Family Dog

Title:  Me and My Pet Dog
Author:  Morley & Orbell
Age:  K-6
Topic:  How To Be The Perfect Pet Owner

We did a pair and share with these two books.  "Bad Dog Marley", is a humurous story about a loveable dog and his adventures with the family.  The students related their own family stories to this book and loved every minute of it.  Then we read a non-fiction book titled "Me and My Pet Dog".  Of all the books we have read, this one generated the most discussion and excitement from the students.  They loved this book and they all had a personal story or comment they wanted to make.  The students were all laughing as they left the library after hearing about the dog who became the world's first Multimillionare dog.  He was left millions by his owner (True Story) . Needless to say the students were gathered around the "600" Dewey section to find a book.

This is also a great book to highlight for third grade as one of their lessons in the "Tell Me About It Introduction to the Ten Classifications of Dewey."
